Weight Management and Wellness:
The Seven Principles to Good Health
By Adrian Langford, CNC and CNHP

Principle #1:   Change Your Perspective of Weight Loss and Dieting

This is probably something you should first consider in my weight normalization program so that you will fully understand that weight problems and health are not unrelated issues.  If you think in terms of:

  • popular diets
  • skipping meals
  • weighing yourself daily
  • starving yourself
  • believing that weight problems are a separate problem from  your overall health

THINK AGAIN!

This kind of thinking will not bring you the results you really want. How many different types of diets have you already tried, and how many times have they failed?

Change your perspective, and you will change your life.

There is empowerment in the knowledge of understanding how you can improve your overall wellness, and get your body back into balance... and here it is:

Your weight will normalize and become what it should be through learning to accept and adopt this perspective to achieve your weight normalization goals, and improved overall health will be one of the many benefits!!!

Principle #2:    Ask Yourself: Are You Ready to Do the Work?

If you can answer ‘yes’, then you could be ready to do the work and give the serious commitment to weight normalization and wellness.
Are you ready to deal with weight problems at the core level?
Are you ready to do the work?
Are you ready for a lifetime commitment to weight normalization and wellness?
Take the ‘Are You Ready’ Quiz to see if you are!
(See ‘Are You Ready’ Quiz  at the end of the Seven Principles).

Principle #3:   Take Physical and Mental Stock of Where You Are Right Now

Get a Physical
Seek a Mental Health Professional if Necessary (*See Principle #5)
Get A Wellness Assessment

If you haven’t gotten a physical in quite some time, then now is the time. You need to know if there are other conditions that you need to address, such as:
Weight loss resistance
Pre/diabetic
Heart Conditions
PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)
Hormonal Imbalances
Thyroid Imbalances
Metabolizing food normally
Inflammatory conditions
Bone conditions

A Newtritional Solutions Assessment can help with:

  • Determining a more appropriate diet (making better food choices), and recipe suggestions
  • Recommending vitamins and herbal supplements specific to your present wellness profile (and deficiencies)
  • Providing noninvasive recommendations

How many different types of diets have you already tried, and how many times have they failed?

Change your perspective, and you will change your life.

Will this Weight Normalization and Wellness program be a challenge? Yes.
There is no measuring, specially made, pre-packaged foods to buy, etc., special diets, and silver bullets, to give you the lifestyle change you seek or need for a life time of weight normalization and wellness.

There is empowerment in the knowledge of understanding how you can improve your overall wellness, and get your body back into balance...And here it is:

Your weight will normalize and become what it should be through learning to accept and adopt this perspective to achieve your weight normalization goals, and improved overall health will be one of the many benefits!!!

Principle #4:   Identifying Imbalances (from Physical, Wellness Assessment, and lab tests) and Set Up Realistic Goals and Put Them Into Action

A realistic goal, for instance, would be losing 1 pound per week, or 4 pounds per month.
Another goal should be changing from eating out often (fast food) to preparing more appropriate foods and snacks.  This would include changing your food choices to ones that are: unprocessed organic food, lean organic meats or minimally processed meats and fish (not farm raised, or tuna (canned or fresh as it contains mercury), complex carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits), purified water, and herbal teas.

A third goal, would be setting up a regular exercise program with a personal trainer, or signing up for an aerobics class or walking club.

Forget the BMI  (Body Mass Index) charts!! These charts are a basic way of measuring body mass (and fat), however, they are not realistic. We are all different in body type. What might be a good weight for one person at 5’4”, may be unhealthy (underweight) for someone else who does weight lifting, or has larger bones, or has chronic health problems.

Some clients find it helpful to keep a daily food journal which helps them get a better understanding of areas of weakness or triggers that cause wrong eating.

Another excellent idea is to enlist the help and support of family, friends and others to help insure that you stay on track with your wellness program. Avoid negative people, non-supporters and saboteurs as much as possible!

Reward yourself with things other than food, like:

  • a manicure or pedicure, or get the full treatment at a spa
  • a massage
  • a good book, DVD or music CD
  • taking a painting class or singing lessons
  • go to a good movie
  • visit a local museum or public garden

Principle #5:   Address Stress, Mental and Emotional Wellness

One’s mental and emotional attitude can go a long way to making or breaking a sound weight normalization and wellness program. If you suspect emotional (anger, fear, unresolved) issues or mental conditions (depression) at the core of your weight problems or eating inappropriately, seek a licensed professional to address and help you resolve these issues.
Learn to deal with stress. (See the List for Destressing in your packet).
Try meditation and breathing exercises--there are many books and cd’s out there on the subject. Or, you can take a yoga class or T’ai Chi (check the newspapers, community college, community centers, etc. for these classes). Exercise and/or physical activity is also excellent for reducing stress.

Find out about what herbals and supplements promote relaxation (Iike 5 HTP, or chamomile, or L-theanine).

Principle #6:   Educate Yourself and Participate In Your Weight and Wellness Program

Sounds simple? Perhaps, but we often have a way of expecting things in our lives to improve by themselves, or without much participation on our part. By becoming involved in your own wellness, I can guarantee you that you will have success.  Do the work, and you will be amazed at where you will be in a few weeks from now!!
Educate yourself from news articles, books, professionals and others ‘who have been there’, and have succeeded with their weight normalization.
Take the time to listen, read and question. Be your own best advocate by caring about your well-being and being responsible for your own destiny. Be ready to receive the positive results that will happen from the work you do today.

Principle #7:   Review Principles #1 through #6

Take a deep breath, and breath out s-l-o-w-l-y. You have just been exposed to a lot of information, and it takes time to digest it, and fully comprehend it, let along implement it.  I encourage you to stop putting off the decision to make this life change! Today’s the day to--- GO FOR IT!

Whatever your decision, I wish each of you the best, and hope that you take some small piece of knowledge provided here today that will make a positive difference in your life!
